What Do
Geoducks Eat
Geoducks
are obtained in harvestable amounts exclusively in
Puget Sound and inland waters of
British
Columbia and
southeast Alaska. The Washington Department of Natural
Resources approximates there are 682 million lbs of
geoducks in state waters.
Geoducks reside mud flats, tunneling to
a depth of three or four ft (90–120 cm), where they dwell
in semi permanent burrows. Geoduck juveniles and
adults eat by filtering out
food particles (phytoplankton) from seawater
.
Geoducks survive by feeding
upon marine algae including diatoms and flagellates.
Geoduck development is varied, contingent on an
assortment of environmental factors, but grow the most
fast-paced during their 1st ten years of
life.
